It's Q&A time!

25th Jun 2022, 5:56 AM

This comic's been around for over eight years, and I've never done one of these..? Well, that's about to change. In a few weeks time I'm going to share the results of this comic's first Q&A. But for that to happen, obviously, I first need your questions. It can be anything related to Because I'm Depressed, the characters, the setting, the drawing process, etc. I can't promise I'll be able to answer every question, but I will do my best. You can post your questions here in the comments if you'd like, or you can also email them to me Looking forward to your queries!

I really enjoy your work.
The characters appear to have aged from the very early comics. This may be because your art style has improved so much, but would you say they're aging? Would you say they're 8+ years older then from the beginning?

(Another thing: I’m going to credit everyone who submits a question that gets answered, so if you’d like to be referred to by something other than your username, or you would like to remain anonymous, just let me know.)

Not quite sure how to phrase this, but does working on this original comic fulfill the same kind of artistic "I want to make something" urge as drawing Metroid fanart and such in the 00's, or are those pretty separate? Have you diverted that creative energy to this and other projects or do you simply draw these characters... and *also* keep a notebook of Samus Arans somewhere?

WAIT QUESTION 2

any plans to release a print version of any selection of chapters or comics? I know that shit is probably expensive and probably complicated in terms of logistics but I would absolutely love to have some BCDE on my shelf.

This is an old thread, but I figured I’d ask anyway! I have a couple of questions. I recently found your comic and I’ve been binging it over the last couple of weeks: I’m in 2020 now. I’ve never felt so connected to a group of characters in my life! You’re amazing.

1. Who is your muse for Diego? You capture depression and despair so well. Is it derived inwardly? Or is there an external person/character influence?

2. What are some of your favorite comics?

3. Will you ever release this in print? I’d love that.

@isleofbrianwilson: I think I answered some of these in the Q&A strips, but here are my answers.

1) You could say the main inspiration for Diego is myself. Especially early in the strip’s run, he was a bit of an author avatar, and a lot of his experiences and woes reflected my own. To varying degrees, all four of the main characters are based on myself as well as other people in my life.

2) One of my favorite comic strips of all time, and probably the most influential in motivating me to make my own comics is Calvin & Hobbes. I still read comics either day, be they graphic novels, newspaper comic collections, or webcomics. A few favs off the top of my head are Belzebubs, Sarah’s Scribbles, and Awkward Zombie.

3) I’ve had a lot of people ask that, and while I have no definite plans yet, it is something I may explore in the future!
